GDE750 – WEEK 15

Finalising the Report and Bringing All Sections Together

This week has been focused on completing the revisions and finalising the second full draft of the report. After the restructuring I did last week, this stage has been more about tightening tone, improving clarity and filling gaps that became obvious once the new sections were in place.

The first task this week was finishing the context chapters. I expanded the cultural discussion of dialect before introducing Barnsley specifically, which was something Dan advised. This made the transition into the Barnsley section feel much more natural and allowed the broader argument about linguistic identity and visibility to develop properly. It also helped reinforce why dialect needs to be considered within global design cultures, rather than treating Barnsley as an isolated case.

I also strengthened the methodology section by explaining Schön’s reflection in action and reflection on action in more detail, showing exactly how these ideas apply to my own research and studio process. This made the methodology feel more justified rather than descriptive.

Throughout the week, I worked on removing conversational language and making the writing more formal. I replaced phrases like “in a way” and removed rhetorical questions, focusing instead on clear, direct academic statements. I also improved time specific language, replacing vague expressions like “for the longest time” with accurate references to typographic periods or movements.

One of the final tasks was improving the structure of the visual analysis. I added more detail to the image reflections, connecting each example to either the suppression of dialect through neutrality or the expressive potential of typography. Including designers like Aries Moross, Bunbury Studios and Marion Deuchars helped make this section feel more contemporary and relevant.

By the end of this week, I had completed the final full version of the report. It now reads as a coherent argument, supported by theory, design history and visual examples. The feedback from Dan has shaped the work significantly, and I feel that the final version is much clearer, stronger and more academically grounded.
