GDE740 – Week 2

This week I have been considering my self-initiated project. The main part of this is working out how I feel and trying to engage this into my work. I have been feeling quite down recently between the work and teaching and it’s become quite overwhelming and I am struggling to balance the two together. I need to find a way of channeling this feeling into my design work and make them work together, because failure is not an option.

Lecture Notes:

  • Third mind – when two minds come together over one subject. This unseen collaboration happens when the two connect.
  • sketching ideas is the first point to any and all projects.
  • Find some form of influence for the project. Whether that is themes, styles of work or movements within design.

DESIGN GENIUS; THE WAYS AND WORKINGS OF CREATIVE THINKERS – GAVIN AMBROS, PAUL HARRIS

  • You cannot hold a design in your hand. It is not a thing. It is a process. A system. A way of thinking‘ – Bob Gill, Graphic Design as a second language
  • Design (ideas, articulations and concepts) don’t exist without us; we create them. It needs to have a system in order to be created and an approach to ‘how you think’
  • Get curious – inquiry is the beginning of meaningful learning
  • Happy accidents – you cannot control them but you can become aware when one happens, something that didn’t go the way you expected but opens more doors to new development.
  • Allow mistakes to happen – mistakes are the foundation of happy accidents. Suspend the control for some time to allow creativity to take over.
  • Allow random – Allowing randomness to happen can help release creativity and help to produce initial sparks of creativity

Bob Gill’s poster which is reference to the improvised nature of jazz music.

‘You are always learning or trying to find out something that you don’t know. It allows you to do everything, be in touch with so many different worlds and learn so much about all sorts of different subjects’

  • THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO DO IT

Good design is making something Intelligible and memorable, Great design is making something memorable and meaningful‘ – Dieter Rams

IF YOU ARE STUCK, THINK AGAIN!

I really want to try and take some form of poster design or campaign project forward with a strong attachment to typography. This the area of design I enjoy and is the area that I want to continue to push my skills in.
