This week Ive been trying to get my head around this business plan. Dear God send help!!!!! I mean I understand the reason why I am doing this and I am not one to mess with the powers that be… but it feels so fake at the minute. I know its hypotheticals and thats all this will be for now, but the amount of thought and time needed for this is so mind melding… my brain hurts daily, hourly and minutely right now.
I had this idea of creating this charity movie screening company, that would go round and put on these open space charity screenings, where all of the proceeds would go to Cancer Research, and Mind. But the more I think about this in terms of the business plan, I get so confused and I think that the fact that it is charity based would make this idea 1000x harder to think about as a business model, especially I have no idea about funding or any of the technical business related design stuff as of yet.
So in light of this, I have decided to look down the route of my own personal practice. This is something that I want to work with. Something that I think that I can grow and develop in the future and will give me some form of aspiration moving through this module of work.
Research Task – Core operational aspects of a design studio
People Operations – focuses on improving how the designs work and collaborate within the company. it addresses the skills of the designer, helps to build a robust design team and helps to improve communication within the business. Onboarding new designers and ensuring they have everything they need to get started.
Business Operations – ensures that the designers have they need in order to keep delivering quality designs that align with the companies goals. This includes securing the budget for the team, planning resources for the teams and making sure that they have the equipment and infrastructure to perform at the highest potential.
Workflow Operations – Streamlining the design workflow by setting up the project management software, building scalable systems and process guidelines. This ensures creative production workflow and enabling the team to measure the impact of their design.
This helps with:
- Operations management
- Process design
- Project management
- Creating a communications strategy
- Onboarding new designers
- The Culture of the design team
- Budget Allocation
Research Task – Research how to map out a hypothetical resourcing model for a new business which utilises your unique design expertise.
Resource management model refers to the way an organisation structures, organises and manages its resources including human and software resources.
- It helps to increase the utilisation rate
- Helps to allocate resources effectively
- Helps to develop the skills and capabilities of the workforce
Centralised resource model
- The central authority that makes the decisions for resource related things. This includes the planning and allocation of the budget
- This could be a dedicated team or department in a large business or a resource manager at a small business.
Decentralised resource model
- Individual teams manage resources and decision making
- Greater sense of democracy, collaboration and decision making.
Hybrid resource model
- Takes from both central and decentralised model
- Democratic decision are made and managed centrally, skills audit and project allocation is done by individual teams.
