GDE710 – Week 6

This week, I have been focusing on my Brief two work. This has been a major challenge for me because I have been struggling to work out where to begin with it. I have been trying to go through Canvas and see what I can do in order to try and spark some ideas and see what I can come up with for ideas. This week I have been looking at the lecture and trying to look at the question of How do I use the un-noticed?

Lecture notes:

  • The lecture references John Berger’s Ways of seeing.
  • Guy Derbord – ‘All of life presents itself in a mass accumulation of spectacles’
    • MEMOIRS – GUY DUBORD
      • Collage book
      • depicts the idea of drifting through the city
      • looks at psycho-geography
  • The most radical gesture: The situationist international in a Post-modern age – Sadie Plant
    • ‘Precise laws and special effects of the geographical environment, consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviours of individuals’
    • The situationists used maps, making alterations to them in order to help investigate unpredictable trajectories.
  • Debord produced a map in 1957 under the title ‘The naked City’.
    • The plan of Paris is cut up and divided into 19 different sections that are randomly placed back together. The user of the map chooses their own route through the city by using a series of arrows that links part of the city together.
  • Richard Brereton – Sketchbook; the hidden art of designers, illustrators and creatives
    • Frédérique Daubal – ‘My sketchbook allows me to be free, to express myself without boundaries’
      • ‘Sketchbooks are far removed from the reality as everything can be included and quality is not important’
      • ‘Record my mood and thought’
