GDE710 – Week 4

This week I have been looking at the second half of brief 1 and how what I do and why design is relevant to my practice. What I am finding is that the project is allowing me to think more about myself and how my own surrounding affects me and my work.

This week I have been following the tasks on Canvas and have been pondering the question How can graphic design be used to communicate your core values?

Lecture notes

  • In the English language there are 450 different terms that include the suffix ‘self’
  • How am I influenced by those that are around me? In terms of work, I am surrounded by like minded creatives that have established practices. Where as when I am at home, my family don’t understand creative subjects. My dad has started to dabble in photography and is enjoying the creative freedom it brings, but my mum doesn’t understand the arts and brings a more realistic and structured life style.
  • I think that we are more influenced by those around us. The nurture of family and the behaviors and traits that we develop over time.
  • Hedonic Adaption – The urge to return to a state of happiness whether you have just experienced positive or negative events.
  • Nudge Theory – Small changes that entice you into doing something. That something needs to be cheep and small.

System 1 – Automatic (more susceptible to nudge theory)

  • Fast paced
  • Unconscious thought
  • Automatic process
  • Everyday decision
  • Error Prone

System 2 – Thought Required (less susceptible to nudge theory)

  • Slow Paced
  • Conscious thought
  • Effortful
  • Complex decisions
  • Reliable

The ‘Self’ – whole range of psychic phenomina in man.

We can not understand the totality of he self – but we can find meaning in it if yo acknowledge our self in its totality.

  • The act of selling became the act of finding out what people wanted and satisfying it.
  • The digital self – an act of proving that you were there at that time.
  • Self – reflective project that the individual is responsible.

Task

‘Create a mood board of images and typography that conveys the values of who you are as a designer. Include a range of work from your favourite designers and artists but try to keep the aesthetic of your mood board thematically consistent’

This was my response to the task this week. This mood board is a visual representation of the core values I strive to put into my designs as a graphic designer. The designs above all show an element of typography that is creative and speaks volume within the work. I want my designs to speak loud and proud about what they represent. The colours within all of these designs use a range of vibrant and bold colour palettes which is a characteristic I want to develop further throughout the course. I want to be more bold with my designs. By being more bold, I am taking risks more and I think that this is something that will grow and explore a long my journey.
